Once a year, the tribes of the Baliem Valley gather in one place for a spectacular celebration of tradition and identity. Dressed in ceremonial attire, the Dani, Yali, and Lani come together to perform dances, ritual battle reenactments and storytelling.
This is more than a public festival—it’s a rare chance to witness these cultures from the inside. Our trip goes beyond the main event: we visit preparation areas, meet local families, and take part in the quiet, authentic moments between the highlights.
Wamena is the gateway to the traditional villages.

THE PLAN
This trip is designed to bring you close to the people behind the Baliem Festival. We don’t just watch—we walk with them behind the scenes. You’ll join festival participants as they prepare, eat, and wait for their performance, gaining insight into village life and tribal identity.
Much of the trip’s beauty lies in the quieter moments: a smile from a warrior in full regalia, a shared meal, or a conversation.
With three nights in Wamena and guided support in English, German, and Indonesian, this is an ideal short journey to discover Papua’s highland cultures up close.
