TOROWAR TRIBE

TOROWAR: THE HIDDEN TRIBE OF THE JUNGLE

Before we get into the details, here’s what makes this journey to the Torowar so special:

In the remote highlands of West Papua lives a community that few outsiders have ever met. Papua Expedition was the first team to visit and befriend this unknown tribe in 2022.

On this trip, we journey deep into Papua’s interior by plane and jeep—far from the known paths.

The Torowar still hunt with spears, cook over open fire and follow a rhythm shaped by jungle, animistic spirits and tradition.

You won’t find Wi-Fi or roads here. What you’ll find instead is human connection, ancient knowledge, and raw experience.

This is not a tribal show. You are invited to witness, learn and take part in the authentic daily life of the Torowar.

Want to expand your adventure?

This area of Papua is also home to one of the world’s best whale shark spots and a wordclass ship wreck from the second world war. With the Whaleshark experience  you can swim alongside gentle 18-meter giants in crystal-clear waters—an unforgettable experience. The whale sharks are considered sacred by locals, and sightings are almost guaranteed.

TRIP OVERVIEW

THE PLAN

HIGHLIGHTS

Our journey begins in Manokwari, from where we fly to Wasior in a small Cessna Caravan and continue by jeep - deep into West Papuas tribal territories.

We stay in simple local houses, eat traditional meals, and are invited to join village life: hunting, crafting, medicine walks, and ceremonies.

Each day is shaped by the people, the land, and the moment—not a rigid schedule.

The trip ends with a farewell ritual, and a long but beautiful return journey through the rainforest.

CHALLENGES

This expedition includes very basic accommodation (shared sleeping spaces, open fire cooking, bucket showers).

Weather can shift and the access road can be flooded, which can require an overnight camp in the jungle to repair the road or a bridge.

Mosquitos are very common in the jungle, but don't contract Malaria or Dengue.

This trip leads to a truly remote tribe with very little contact to the outside world. It is for those who are ready to observe, participate, and respect—not consume.

  • Our most immersive cultural itinerary with unforgettable insights into the Torowar tribe.

  • Learn from the survival masters about living in the jungle.

  • The Noken is a tribal gift with deep spiritual meaning - learn how to create one and other ancient handcraft techniques including construction of a tribal house.

  • Observe 2 species of paradise birds next to the village.

  • Authentic indigenous kitchen with bushmeat and edible plants from the jungle.

  • Participate at a hunting ceremony, where the tribe is sending thanks to the jungle by chanting and playing the drums.
