MAGEY JUNGLE ADVENTURE
FIVE DAYS CULTURAL IMMERSION
MEET THE ORIGINAL PEOPLE OF MISOOL
Before we get into the details, here’s a brief overview about the rich indigenous culture in Misool:
This expedition goes into the remote rainforest of southern Raja Ampat to the indigenous Matbat people, the original inhabitants of Misool.
Over several days, we’ll explore deep jungle terrain, far from roads, Wi-Fi, or crowds. We’ll travel by boat and foot into the wild, sleep in camps we build ourselves, and learn directly from the Matbat how they live off the land.
You’ll experience raw nature and rich culture: spotting tropical birds and wildlife, making traditional Sago, fishing the local way, and collecting jungle vegetables.
Every meal is part of the story—cooked over open fire with ingredients from the forest.

TRIP OVERVIEW
THE PLAN
Traditional Knowledge - Life in the Rainforest
Our journey begins in Sorong, followed by a ferry ride and a private boat trip to the Matbat village of Magey.
From there, you travel by boat 30 km up the river into the forest. You’ll stop along the way to help produce sago—the traditional staple food—using hand tools and centuries-old techniques. After lunch, you continue upriver to the basecamp, located deep in the forest, far from villages and roads.
You’ll rise early to go birdwatching, collect and prepare vegetables, and, if conditions allow, learn how to make coconut oil or basic tools from bamboo.
One highlight is the half-day trip to the remote hidden Malol waterfall for swimming and a picnic in nature.
Each evening ends with a shared meal and time to reflect by the fire.
After two nights in the jungle, the group returns to Magey and continues toward Sorong by boat in the afternoon. Arrival in Sorong is very early on the next morning.
CHALLENGES
Basic Conditions, Wild Beauty
This is a low-comfort, off-grid experience. It’s not physically extreme, but it does require flexibility, basic fitness, and a willingness to adapt.
Here are a few things you should be ready for:
-
Basic facilities: In Magey, accommodations are clean but very simple (no running water or Western toilets). In the jungle, you’ll bathe in the river, use basic latrines, and sleep on mats in huts.
-
Boat travel: Most transport is by motorized canoe. It can be loud, wet, or bumpy depending on the weather. Life jackets are provided.
-
Humidity & insects: Expect hot and humid conditions. Mosquitoes and other insects are common, especially in the jungle.
-
No internet or mobile signal: Once you leave Magey, you’ll be fully offline for the jungle portion. There is no phone reception in the forest.
THE LANDSCAPE
Rainforest Rivers and hidden Waterfalls
The landscape shifts from the coastal village of Magey into dense rainforest accessible only by river.
You’ll pass mangroves, pass through winding jungle creeks, and sleep beside clear forest streams.
Camps are surrounded by palms, towering trees, and a chorus of birds and insects.
The Malol waterfall, hidden deep in the forest, offers one of the region’s most peaceful and beautiful swimming spots.
